This Friday I have a mystery object inspired by something that might be making an appearance in Jake’s forthcoming book:
Any idea what these little pieces of bone might be?
As usual, you can put your comments, questions and suggestions below and I’ll do my best to reply. Enjoy!
I think these are examples of the bones for which Jake was having trouble finding reference images; can’t think of a cryptic clue, so I’ll just say they’re from a small-to-medium species and leave it at that.
Still can’t think of a cryptic clue, but to clarify my previous guess, I’m thinking S not F.
Now I’m confused!
Oh, in that case a pair of c’s.
Are these part of why I needed a licence?
I’ve just checked, mine are 5.5cms and that was a juvenile, so a smaller cousin, but very interesting bones to choose.
just a remnant!
I don’t think so… (about the licence, although I’m not sure!)
They’re apostrophes ! There are loads of those in the book.
Tiny ribs? Hyoid branches? Penis bones? Cat clavicles?
It would probably be so much easier to narrow it down if I could turn them over rather than be limited to a photograph.
You’re right about one of those suggestions 😉
My money’s on hyoid bones.
Nope – not hyoid.
a f*rc*la that has broken in half?
Not exactly, but you’re not far off…
I think some kind of split hyoid bone – but not sure if these exist. The curve on the narrow end of the bones looks a bit like a human hyoid – though the human version is one U-shaped bone
They’re not split (they’re two separate bones) and they’re not related to the hyoid.
maybe cat clavicles?
