Because the spina (= the ridge on the bone) goes straight up when it starts. On *o*s* it goes up “slowly”. If you image google you can (hopefully) see what I mean.
I vote for sc****a and h*****s from a b*v*d or c*rv*d. Seems too small for a modern **w and a bit too large for *h*e*. Seeing as the Horniman gets its bones from all over the world, I wouldn’t want to specify without a good reference collection.
I’m not sure how to read the measuring device, but I’m pretty sure the scapulae are that of a cervid. The humeral head isn’t right for a black-tailed deer (I’m in California, so my knowledge of European species is nil). When I found this site I was (and am) so excited to find others that like to identify things like what you have. This is SO fun.
I did a post on *c*p*l* shapes ! This one is like *e*r or *h*e* but it’s so big I think it must be **w.
I think so, too. Left side
Phew. At least it looks as though I got the bone right. Why **w and not, say, *o*s*?

I think the horse scapula is a bit less strongly triangular than this and doesn’t have such a hooked acromion

S*a*u*l* of a B. pr***g***nus?

Glad you like it Jeanie! The thick grey sections of the scale bar are 5cm, so the scapula is pretty big.
maybe to much imagination, i think its scapula from marina mammals? hehehe
