This week I have something from the Horniman’s collections that some of you will probably be able to identify straight away, whilst others may have a slightly harder time:
Any idea what it is?
Put your suggestions, comments and questions below and I’ll do my best to respond. Good luck!
Is it horn ?
It’s not horn
It looks like it belongs to a mini unicorn. Is it from a marine creature?
It does indeed belong to a marine creature
Unicorn horns are spiral, everyone knows that!
Sorry, I’m more into dragons and elves.
I am trying to get inside this problem, but I’m a bit at sea still, perhaps Anne or Moll might have the answer.
Stay at sea but don’t waste your time with Anne
*cap***od*?
😉
D******** d****** because of the ridges?
or may be s*x******** which would be the right size.
A relative of the ammonites, a be….nite.
Not a belemnite!
Could this hard outer casing be named in association with a distinguishing feature of certain members of the proboscids?
It could indeed
To this non-biologist it looks like a cross between a loofah and some kind of organic clarinet. In fact at first I thought you’d raided the music collection
and is there a reason why this is posted in homeopathy? 😉
Again I’m late to the party, but I agree it’s some type of scaphopod. Dentalium sp. maybe?
(Also late.) It may not be a horn, but it is a tusk (of sorts).
