A rather belated mystery object today – my excuse being that I forgot it’s Friday! Been too busy finishing my skeptic talk for the Nineworlds Geekfest this weekend.
Here is the object for you to have a go at identifying:
As usual you can leave your comments, questions and suggestions below, but I apologise in advance that I probably won’t get a chance to reply until Sunday. Good luck!
Would I be miles off thinking fossil c*t*c**n?
You are half right 😉
Antler x Rudolf’s to be specific 😉 Dead Rudolf x
😉 It’s not an antler – not even Rudolf’s
Upper jaw bone?
Nope, nothing maxillary happening here…
Rib from a d*l*h*n?
You are half right – it is indeed a rib, but not from a cetacean.
A spare left over from the last Ice Age?
Even older…
Hmm, so it’s a fossil of a large rib but not cetaceous (is that a thing?)… Would this be a p*ch*d*rm found at *bbsfl**t?
Not a pachyderm, although I suppose it is in a literal sense rather than an old taxonomic term…
How about a mammoth rib?
Something just a little bit more awesome…
Definitely a rib, too big to be deer, horse or cow. Maybe whale or mammoth ? Looks ancient and it must be important and rare because it’s fairly broken and if there of lots of them then you’d keep a better one.
I like your thinking! Your’e on the right track – big and old. Very old…
Big, older than the last ice age, and a bit more awesome than a mammoth? A dinosaur? Or some interglacial megafauna?
You’re getting warmer!
