This week I have yet another bird skull from the collections I’m working on that I thought you might find interesting:
Any idea what this skull came from? As usual you can put your suggestions and questions below and I’ll do my best to reply during the day. Good luck!
Postorbital & mandible regions look like Fr*t*rc*l*, never seen the rostral region without keratinous cover though so unsure.
I did a bit of Puffin a while back: https://paolov.wordpress.com/2012/07/09/friday-mystery-object-155-answer/
They do look similar in overall shape of the bill, but as you can see, the details are quite different (not least the lack of salt gland scars in this specimen).
From the shape of the beak, possibly a member of the Cuculiformes?
You’re on the right track!
From the family: M…, and about the same size as Co. cr., but not quite the right shape. None of the other examples I can find are any closer, so I’m a bit stuck now.
On further investigation, I’ll put aside my doubts and go for the Great Blue
does it like bananas and have a relative that sounds very anti-social?
Well, strictly speaking they don’t actually like bananas, but you wouldn’t know it from it the name of the family!
is it blue?
evening jam container?
They don’t have such robust bills
would the answer also be the name of a musical?
Hmm, I can’t think of any musicals that would fit!
I was thinking Ani (little orphan vs smooth-billed) but I’m guessing I’m a way away.
To me it looks like a great blue turaco (Corythaeola cristata)
I’m going to guess Cr******** s**********is.
