Friday mystery object #483

Happy (Good) Friday everyone! It’s that time of year when a lot of people in the temperate zones of the Northern Hemisphere are thinking about the springing of Spring and all that entails in terms of flowers blooming, bees buzzing and cute little bunnies doing what they’re famous for.

To mark the upcoming celebration of the pagan fertility goddess Ēostre and the Christian festival of Easter, I have a suitably seasonal specimen from the Dead Zoo for you to have a go at identifying:

Any idea what species this fuzzball might be? I suspect that this may prove more challenging than you might expect, especially since this specimen is very faded by sunlight, so I’m keen to see if anyone can work it out. Have fun!

  1. Does it rhyme with a meaty flavour? Come from a land that was the theme of a song by a band with a gaseous name?

      • Kate – Umami / Amami as a rhyming pair (I think, I don’t speak Japanese so I don’t know for sure) and the song reference was ‘Turning Japanese’ by the Vapours.

        • Adam! Those were good clues! I just couldn’t figure them out. My clues were in reference to the fact I discovered that both the front and back claws of the Amami rabbit are different: with the hind feet having curved claws. Since we have curve balls in baseball, the second reference was the fact that baseball is Japan’s favorite sport, where the rabbits live though I didn’t give a clue about the two islands.

          Fun stuff!

          • Ahhh!, I didn’t look hard enough to uncover that fact about their claws and was stuck trying to find a sport that was popular on the Amami Islands in particular.

  2. A Manipedi would provide the biggest clue to this one, since it seems to be throwing us a curved ball. And this sport is most popular on these little islands.
