This week I’ve got two bits of bone (photographed to show the shape from each side) that I identified at work last week – can you work out what these are and what animal they’re from?

They look like q******e bones from a b**d. Assuming I am correct, I would not have any idea how to narrow it down to the species level. I look forward to hearing the answer on Monday! I’m out! 🙂

They’re odd, but not funny! Sorry, I should have said – there are only two bones, but I’ve made sure there is a photo that shows their shape from every side.

Are they from a haggis skull ?
I think we have a ‘P’ on the left and a ‘Q’ on the right. Not mammalian, as the ‘Q’ becomes an ‘I’ in mammals. Something quite large & feathery?

Oh, it’s just one bone? Confused, as you say at the top you have two. So, it’s a pair of corresponding bones, but only one is in the photos?
It’s a left and right version of the same bone. Both are photographed from two different angles each, so all aspects of the morphology can be seen (albeit from differential planes of symmetry).

I’m with Anthony in respect of the left one! Really not sure about the one on the right.

Oh god, well I am baffled. The top two are two views of the same bone, and the bottom two are two views of a different bone, very similar? Sorry you have to spell it out for us!
There is a left and right bone, with the top being one from two angles and the bottom being the other from the other two angles. Hopefully that makes a bit more sense!
Oooooo-kaaaay…. Umm I still think Q bones but the right hand views look very odd.
A thought occurrs- They are not, perchance blacksmith tool bones from the ymp*n*m of a
….ooops… From the t*mp*n*m of a lactating organism?

Now that I think they are q’s too, they are bigger than the one in my biggest bird skull, so maybe rattite ?
Good suggestion, but these q’s are from a flier.
Toucan or hornbill ?
Doesn’t seem to match any of the really large species, so perhaps something smaller, but with a very powerful bite?

I should’ve worked this out earlier. I think I have the skull of one of these critters at home. A scarlett variety of this critter to be exact. Pretty fair effort Paolo…identifying a skull from the Q bones. I admit, they are quite distinct. Certainly quite different than every other Q bone I’ve seen…well, more different than any I’ve paid attention to, obviously. I’ll be going home to check my skull tonight!
