Recently I’ve had quite a few fish identifications to deal with, so I thought I’d share the joy with this specimen from the Dead Zoo:
If you want some information to help, it’s about 65mm long and if it’s from Irish waters.
Let me know your thoughts!
Salty Irish waters, I presume: I don’t thinkI’ve ever seen a freshwater fish this color!
Yep, it’s from saltwater
Is it a baby? For us old-fashioned types, it’s about 2 and a half inches long?
It’s fully grown, just on the teensy side!
I cling on to the hope you’ll see this little sucker in Cornwall, too.
😉
I am sure, given my handle, that it’s a sleepy tiny horse. I am almost surely wrong but, as a Palfrey Man, I don’t care: I am loyal to the idea that any such fish has something to do with me me me…
So, having looked them up, despite the horsey head, this doesn’t seem to be a sygnathid. Pike type?
Not of either a horse of pike persuasion…
Alas, I figured that out eventually. But if not a horseman or a pikeman then what? Longbowman? I don’t think it’s an archer, though I am prepared to be wrong. As usual.
Not a baby, hmmm. Funny face. Is it eating a sucker?
Does it have a dorsal fin
and does it ever stick it out?
Does it have a bristly chin
on its funny little snout?
It’s not so beardy
