This week, inspired by the discussion of the scapula of the last mystery object, I thought I’d give you this shoulder blade to have a go at identifying:
Any idea which species this came from? I’m interested to hear what you make of this one!
I said looks like a pig as part of my cryptic clue. I think I have the right family but will concede it could be my guy’s larger cousin (which is, going by its binomen, some kind of horse).
Well I am really mystified by this! I have looked at herds of scapulas but haven’t found one. Am I reading the cm scale wrong? Is this about 20cm wide?
triangular and stout… a fossorial ungulate?
Surprisingly not fossorial given the robustness, although it is from an ungulate.
Something that looks like a pig from the land of the free?
I suppose it could be considered to have some porcine similarities, but it’s from the Old World.
liberiensis = from the land of freedom, roughly
pigs have curved scapular spines. Mostly more curved than this one?

Different family – if you follow the cladistic treatment, but you clue about the binomen suggests you’re on the money!
Indeed… it’s not a suid!

Well, the scale bar is 8cm, so probably closer to 30cm across
My momentum is really tapering off now. 😦
hippo?
I’m on the horns of a dilemma…or would that be the horn of a lemma?
