This week I have something a little different for you to have a go at identifying:

I’d love to hear your thoughts on what this fossilised Friday mystery might be!

Upon reflection, think it is likely the setigerous contemporary of the spiny canadian, named after the famous shale.

It doesn’t appear to have the fully spaced out parapodia of ‘classic’ looking Burgessochaeta, but the setae seem shorter and less overlapping than Canadia. I found a few pictures online of Burgessocheta for sale that look very much like this specimen ( see https://www.onlinefossilshop.com/shop/exceptional/burgess-shale-polychaete-burgessochaeta-setigera/ ). They are white and strongly contrasting with the black shale, so I assume they are being sourced from a slightly different locality than the classic Walcott Quarry (which isn’t available to collect commercially). I’m assuming this specimen comes from that same source, whatever it is.
